平成21年度 科学英語II （Scientific English II）
2009年度後期授業科目
平成21年度の後期の授業科目である「科学英語II（Scientific English II）：2単位」では、医学教育学講座講師のChristine Kuramotoが世話教員として担当します。
［一般学習目標（General Learning Objectives）］は、
Learning the basics of scientific paper writing and poster presentation.
- be able to write a cover letter and CV
- be able to write an abstract using your own research from the free quarter lab study
- be able prepare and present a poster of your research
です。指定教科書は、Amanda Tompson／相川直樹 著の「How to Write an English Medical Paper that will be Published: A Guide for Japanese Doctors」（医学書院）となっています。
生命科学科３年生15名による英語によるポスター発表が1月29日午後、百年講堂で行なわれました。発表内容は第3学年前期に設定された「早期研究室体験実習（平成21年6月15日～7月10日）」並びにこれに続く「フリークォーター（7月13日～9月11日）」の期間を活用して、学生の希望に応じて割振られた研究室での体験・成果を基に、論文に繋がる英文レポートを作成し、ポスターとしてまとめたものです。直接研究をご指導いただいた教室の先生と海外からの留学生に参加していただき、活発な質疑が行われました。前日の夜遅くまで発表の練習をした成果が出ており、参加した教員から大変良い評価をいただきました。国際学会での成果発表や英文学術誌への論文投稿が科学者としてのキャリアアップには極めて重要です。この研究成果発表会での体験を通して、自信をつけるとともに粘り強く研究に取り組む事の大切さを自覚して、彼らのステップアップのための弾みとなることを期待しています。
生命科学科では全学教育における語学学習に継続して、学年進行とともに科学英語IからIVの科目があり、英語での講義や英文科学論文の読解に継続して取り組み、英語力のブラッシュアップとともに国際的に活躍できる教養を身につける事を目指しています。
担当教員のお一人であるChristine Kuramoto 先生からは次のようなコメントをいただきました。
Kyushu University Mock International Conference
The first annual Kyushu University Mock International Poster Conference was a resounding success. The success was largely due to the individualized instruction by mentoring professors and researchers in each lab. The students worked on the English content over a period of 12 weeks in their Scientific English II class, gradually producing the final poster product. They then carefully practiced 5 minute oral presentations, concentrating on communicating the main points within the time limit.
On the day of the conference, they were all very nervous, but all of them made me so proud when they mustered their courage and made their presentations. After presenting, they all put a lot of effort into answering the difficult questions that were asked in English by their professors and others. And though they weren't perfect, they all made great progress toward becoming excellent presenters someday.
I think that this experience will be one that they will always remember. It was a first step into the international world of scientific conferences. I expect to hear some beautiful English spoken when one (or more) of them accepts the Nobel Prize someday. And when they do accept that prize, I am sure that they will remember their beginnings in the School of Medicine, Department of Biomedical Science at Kyushu University. And they'll be grateful for what they learned here at Kyudai. And we, who knew them when they were here, will be proud to say we saw them when they were starting out.
I am excited to think of next year's biomedical science students who will become the second class to present at our mock conference. And I hope that this year's class-our pioneers-will be there to cheer them on.
